The Hill – A Place to Play

The project is called The Hill as that is the shape it will be – a landscaped structure rising out of a Thames-side garden and enclosing a series of large galleries linked by tunnels and caves.  It has no generic name because it will be the first of its type anywhere in the world – a place of total immersion; a catalyst for the imagination; a permanent gallery of installations; a contemporary version of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens; ‘an urban ‘Eden’.

Our target position is Potters Fields, the last remaining vacant site in London’s South Bank cultural ‘string of pearls’ and right next to the world heritage sites of Tower Bridge and The Tower of London.  The proposal meets all the planning criteria for the site as well as fulfilling the aspirations of the Olympic Cultural Committee for a legacy attraction.

Persian Architcture

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

The other day i was hung over and ended up enthralled in a 4hr documentary on Iran and the West.
Rather excellent show but i soon got distracted by the beautiful contemporary architecture in the background. Some of which looked like it came out of some desert planet in Star Wars.

Heres a few interesting pieces that i found over the web.

The tomb of Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer Omar Khayyam now has a modern monument, here internally lit during an annual celebration. Not sure when it was built…

Azadi Tower (Freedom Tower) in Iran 1971
&
The Monument of the Martyrs ( Maquam E’ chahid ) in Algiers 1982

Drive-in Cinema, Tehran 1965 < i love this

Iran Senate House Dome 1960 < and this

Lotus Temple 1996 (Reminds me of the Sydney Opera House 1973)

The ABC of Indian Art

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Got this book off a friend about 7 months ago from an Indian street stall in Dehli i think..
Still havt finished it yet. Its a hard dry read, first published in 1922 written by an Englishmen, J. F. Blacker. Covers everything from textiles, architecture, motifs, religion, mythology… Its a shame the cover doesn’t scan very well but i will add a few extracts and photos soon…

Zaha Hadid

Blows my mind every time. I want her to design my office and my home…
I like the way she thinks about space and molds her buildings as if they were sculptures and organic forms from the future..
