Gilles Peterson Summer Jazz Mix

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Stumbled upon this mix, and truely love it. Gilles got some killa taste.

The set starts out with some lovely mellow old skool jazz and then develops to more improv session stuff that gets a little obscure in the build up. Building to a sort of calamity of sounds but it smooths out nicely near the end part… worth a listen.

Quality stuff for a Sunday afternoon or watching the busy world pass by.

V.I.V.E.K – Feel It EP – Vinyl Sleeve Design

Friday, August 20th, 2010

12″ vinyl sleeve design for foward thinking dubstep label Deepmedi Records
I was asked to design the sleeve featuring a sadhu in a transcending meditative pose for this double vinyl EP from V.I.V.E.K

The tracks are dark & subtle with deep base, space and texture laced all over.

Heres how the cover artwork developed:

Initial sadhu sketch

Edited and digitally painted + devi lamps

Stars / Cosmic background detail

Spine aged texture

Recommended typography and layout – Click image to view larger or cilc here

Labels 1 and 2 of 4
The labels were eventually changed to the generic Deepmedi labels to keep inline with the record label.

Final edited sleeve

You can here the rest of the tracks > Here

If you into your dubstep then also check out the beautiful Natural Mystic previously featured on the Cabein Blog.

Shaa’ir + Func – ‘EVERY TIME YOUR AROUND’

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Arguably the most commercially successful indie band in India right now, Shaa’ir + Func are certainly on their way to being the most prolific. Formed officially in 2007, Shaa’ir + func, commonly known as S+F, have already garnered recognition as VH1’s top emerging artists of 2007, best independent artists of 2008 (VH1), nominations from the AVIMA foundation as Best Dance Act in South-East Asia in 2009, and recognition from the Jack Daniel Rock Awards for best female front-woman of a band.

In three years, whilst actively touring throughout India, the UK, and the East coast of the US, S+F wrote and released two commercially successful albums, New Day: The Love Album, and Light Tribe, and are currently in the final mixing stages of their third record, Mantis due to release very soon. Their music includes a heavy dose of experimentation within the popular and cutting edge genres of dance/electronic/and rock music, while retaining a world pop accessibility.

S+F can’t stop, won’t stop, and seem to be riding some sort of magic carpet that was created by the eastern winds specifically for them – This carpet has carried them to play at the Big Chill Festival UK, Glastonbury UK ( saw them play live, they smashed it) , Oya Festival Norway, C/O Pop Germany, On The River Fest UK, India Festival Amsterdam, Nokia Music Festival Dubai, MIDEM Music Conference France to name a few. Ambassador’s for what they call The New India, S+F’s music is as explosive and flavoursome as India’s cuisine itself; a suitable metaphor for the versatility of these punk, guru-esque, elctro-folk, soul-funk, down and up-beat musicians of the world.

2 lovely geniuses
Really feeling this music video, with the track stop motion works perfectly. I also like the bits were they levitating of the ground  slightly like superhuman space musicians in odd settings. Love it at 01:53 Shaa’ir eyes glaze over and turn white!

BO! And still pretty!
